The Thanjai MaamaNi Koil, located in Thanjavur on the banks of the VeNNaar river, is a group of three temples worshipped as one divya desam. All the three temples are within walking distance of each other and located on the road leading to Kumbakonam from Thanjavur.
According to the Brahmanda Purana, Sage Parasara was performing penance in this region when he was constantly disturbed by the three demons; Thanjagan, Gajamukhan and Thandagan. Frustrated, the sage sought the protection of Lord Narayana who beheaded Thanjagan with his Sudarshana chakram. Gajamukhan took the form of an elephant and to battle him the Lord transformed into his Narasimha Avataram and destroyed him. Terrified, the third demon Thandagan fled to patala loka to escape the wrath of the Lord. Lord Narayana, however, transformed into a boar-Varaha Avataram and descending into patala loka killed Thandagan.
After vanquishing all the three demons, the Lord manifested as Bhoovaraha Murthy and is worshipped in this form in Sri Mushnam.
In all the three temples the Lord is worshipped in his Narasimha Avatar. In the Veera Narasimhar Koil He is depicted wielding his Sudarshana chakram with an elephant seated on his lap, while in the Neelmegha Perumal Koil he is depicted along with his consort Sri Mahalakshmi in wedding attire.
