King Ambarisha engrossed in the worship of the Lord failed to strengthen his army and lost his kingdom. One day, sage Durvasa arrived while the king was observing the ekadasi fast. When King Ambarisha did not notice the sage, he cursed the king. Distraught, the king fell at the feet of the Lord and prayed to Him for protection from the sage’s curse. Lord Narayana sent his discuss in pursuit of the sage. Sage Durvasa, unable to escape from the Sudarshana Chakram, gave up his ego and surrendered at the lotus feet of the Lord freeing King Ambarisha from the curse. The king in gratitude built this temple and hence the Lord is also worshipped here as Ambarisha Varadan.
The river Cauvery, worried that she was polluted because of all the sins that people washed in her waters, prayed to Lord Narayana and was purified again.
A parrot living within the temple complex used to chant the name of Lord Narayana and bring fruits everyday as an offering to Him. One day, this parrot was shot by a hunter and as it fell it cried out for the Lord’s help. Lord Narayana appeared before the dying parrot and granted it relief from the cycle of rebirth.
These legends teach us that the Lord is a protector of all beings, living or non-living. Hence, the Lord here is known as Jagath Rakshagan – protector of the universe.
