This divya desam is situated between the Kudamurutti and VeNNaar rivers around 10 kms from Thanjavur and 4 kms from Thiruvaiyaaru. This temple is also known as Kandiyur as Lord Shiva attained vimochanam (release) from the sin of destroying one of Lord Brahma’s five heads.
The legend associated with this temple is that Goddess Parvati once mistakenly worshipped Lord Brahma instead of Lord Shiva as both had five faces. This angered Lord Shiva who plucked off the fifth head of Lord Brahma. From this moment onwards, Shiva was cursed and the fifth head of Brahma was stuck to his hand.
He worshipped Lord Vishnu at Thirukkarambanur and was partially relieved from this curse. He then worshipped Lord Vishnu at Thirukkandiyur, took a dip in the tank nearby and finally was able to get rid of the fifth head of Brahma, thus relieving him fully from the curse. The pushkarini where Shiva took a dip came to be known as Kabaala Theertham. Lord Shiva was pleased and built this temple in gratitude.
