This temple, also known as one of the ‘Pancha Ranga Kshetram’ of Lord Vishnu, is situated around 15 km from Srirangam and can be reached via bus from Trichy through the town of Lalgudi.
Believed to have been built in the 8th century AD by the medieval Chola kings, the temple is situated on the banks of the river KoLLidam and is spread over an area of around 1.5 acres. Here, Sundararaja Perumal presides in a reclining posture on his serpent bed Adisesha along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi.
According to temple legend, Brahma the creator believed himself to be the most handsome person in all of his creation. His pride and ego grew to such an extent that Lord Vishnu decided to teach him a lesson and cursed him to be born as a mere mortal on earth. Once born as a human being, Brahma started repenting and doing penance to please Lord Vishnu. Vishnu appeared to Brahma as a very handsome man. Awed by the Lord’s splendor and beauty, Brahma inquired as to who he was. Lord Vishnu then appeared in his true form and showed Brahma that outward beauty is only temporary and fleeting; one has to be beautiful from within.
This place is closely associated with the creators. ‘Anbu’ in Tamil means love – hence the name ‘Anbil’. Lord Vishnu showed Brahma that a truly beautiful and love filled heart sees everything around as beautiful and good.
