Legend has it that, Lord Shiva once in a fit of anger, cut off one of Lord Brahma’s heads. In order to get rid of this sin, he started going from place to place seeking bhiksha (begging for alms). However, whenever he was offered food, his bowl remained empty and his hunger was never satisfied. Finally, at Thirukkarambanur, taking pity on him, Goddess Mahalakshmi offered him food and satisfied his hunger. Lord Shiva then continued to stay at this place and came to be known as Bhikshai Andavar. The temple is also known as Bhikshaandavar Koil.
Thirumangai Azhwar praised the Lord here as Uththamar and so this place came to be known as Uththamar Kovil. It is believed that Lord Ranganathar of Srirangam visits this temple once every year.
There are separate sannadhis for all three supreme deities at this temple, that is, Lord Narayana, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.
